Getting Here and Transport
Cologne's location makes it very convenient to get to. The Cologne Bonn Airport as well as the central train station provides connections throughout Europe and the world.
The more preferred way is cycling. Like most German cities, Cologne’s traffic system is laid out to be bicycle friendly. There is a widespread cycle network which features pavement edge cycle lanes linked by bicycle priority crossings. In some of the narrow one-way streets cyclists are allowed to travel both directions.
Cologne’s railway service is linked with Deutsche Bahn Intercity. Trains stop at Koln Hauptbahnhof which is Cologne’s Central Station. The high speed trains also link Cologne to Amsterdam, Brussels and even Paris. There are also other frequent trains which will bring you to other German cities such as Frankfurt and Berlin.
Cologne Ports is one of the largest operators for inland ports in Germany. It also offers Rhine River cruises all along the Rhine. A great way of relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
The airport is centrally located in the Cologne-Bonn Region. It is just 15 kilometres from Cologne City Centre and just 16 kilometres from Bonn. It is the sixth largest airport in Germany and one of the few 24 hour operating airports. In 2007 roughly 10 million passed through the airport making it the second largest in terms of cargo flights.
Once you have arrived at Cologne's airport, reaching the centre of the city has become easier now than before because of the new railroad track that was opened in 2004. The airport is connected to the fast rail system ICE and to the main station of Cologne. Whoever wants to have a more comfortable and quick way to get to town within 15 minutes can still take one of the many taxis cabs waiting at the exits for you.
